ADEX 2014

In April 2014 we participated in a big event at the Asian Dive Expo (ADEX) at Marina Bay Sands in Singapore in April. I was invited as a speaker and artist. Besides that I also receive the ADEX Coral Reef Ambassador during the expo. The award is presented to me by the director of Beuchat France. Along with this award I also receive diving equipment sponsored by Beuchat and a compact underwater camera set from Sea Life.

The title of my talk at ADEX is “Broad Scaled Coral Propagation through Education”. In this topic I described how the Ocean Quest coral propagation work. I also introduce the education system we have created that could empower the people to take active step in coral reef rehabilitation. In conjunction with the expo Asian Diver Magazine published an article about my coral propagation activity in Malaysia.

On the art side I did a life demo on acrylic painting and t-shirt painting. The painting I made is later donated to the Children Cancer Hospital. The hand painted t-shirt is put on sale. Over thirty pieces of hand painted t-shirt are sold during ADEX. Some of the t-shirts are painted on location and some are painted prior to the event.

Our coral propagation programs are also promoted by our partner at Sea Shepherd. Together we are exploring possibilities of expanding the broad scaled education system to diving centers in this region. The coral propagation is promoted as part of the Sea Shepherd Dive program.

We had good times in this three days dive show. We meet new friends that we can share our interest with. I learned that many conservation societies traveled great distances to the show. That makes me happy to know some of the people who are really committed to the cause of saving the ocean. We biggest gratitude to ADEX and Asian Diver Magazine for inviting us to the show. We also thank Beuchat for their contribution and sponsor of the diving equipment. Thanks also to Gary Stokes and Nick Coburn Phillips for the images used in this article. With their recognition we returned with higher spirit and commitment to our work.

What was awarded to me at ADEX are collective work and effort put in by many. And the recognition also goes Nadia and all the trainers as part of the Ocean Quest team. In time we believe the team will grow, more people will take part and eventually it translate to large scale coral reef restoration. We will cherish our achievement through seeing our corals survive against the odds.
